Mel Gibson Shows His True Colors

Mel Gibson's Astrology Chart
Mel Gibson was born January 3, 1956 at 4:45 PM in Peekskill, NY.

No one ever knows what's in another's heart, but what's uttered in one's words certainly give potent clues. When drunk, people typically say exactly what they mean. Gibson's arrest for drunk driving on Friday, July 28, 2006 at 2:36 AM in Malibu, California seemed to confirm long held suspicions of anti-Semitism.

The Incident

Arresting officer Deputy Mee reportedly taped the exchanged between himself and Gibson from the time he stopped Gibson to the time Gibson was put in the patrol car. Upon being pulled over for drunken driving, Gibson is quoted as saying: "My life is f…..d." Once inside the patrol car, Gibson is reported to have banged himself against the seat and proceeded to rant against the arresting officer that he owned Malibu and would spend all his money to get even. Gibson's anti-Semitic tirade followed: "F g Jews…The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." He then asked the arresting officer if he was a Jew. (Mee is reported to be Jewish.) At the station Gibson asked a female sergeant "What are you looking at, sugar tits?" Gibson continued to say he was "f….d" and how he was going to "f…" Deputy Mee. The sergeant on duty is said to have felt that Mee's report on the arrest was too inflammatory and that Mee was ordered to write another report, but news got out anyway.

Gibson's Statement Following the Incident

"After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed. I drove a car when I should not have, and was stopped by the LA County Sheriffs. The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person. I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said. Also, I take this opportunity to apologize to the deputies involved for my belligerent behavior. They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself. I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry. I have battled with the disease of alcoholism for all my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse. I apologize for any behavior unbecoming of me in my inebriated state and have already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health."

The Background

Gibson has long denied accusations of being anti-Semitic. He wrote and directed the movie "The Passion of Christ," which portrayed Jews as sharing in the guilt for the crucifixion of Christ. Gibson's movie portrayed the Sedevantist view that contradicts the Second Vatican Council of 1962-1965 which warned against reading the Gospels too literally. Gibson's father, Hutton Gibson, has called the Holocaust fiction. He has also been quoted as saying that Al Qaeda hijackers were not responsible for September 11.

The Fallout

Fallout from the arrest has come swiftly. New York Sun columnist Thane Rosenbaum has said, "Sometimes an actor is not acting. Take, for example, Mel Gibson's recent public behavior and a good many of his films. The performance comes across as seamless mainly because he was never performing. We just happen to be watching someone acting naturally…No matter what Gibson says now, it wasn't the booze talking to those stunned police officers who never realized that all of those iconic Gibson screen legends, perhaps, were not acting at all."

Reuters reported that ABC television network "has pulled a miniseries about the Holocaust it was developing with Mel Gibson's production company. An ABC representative told the paper, without elaborating, it has been two years and the network still has not seen a script, so the project is being pulled. A spokesperson for ABC, which is owned by Walt Disney could not be reached for comment."

Andrew Gumbel of the Belfast Telegraph Digital: "In Hollywood, there are screw-ups, and then there are the career-ending screw-ups… Ever since the 2004 release of his hugely controversial but highly lucrative biblical epic The Passion of Christ, Gibson has been fending off accusations of anti-Semitism – in his film, in his family background, and in his personal belief system."

The Boston Globe reporting about ABC's talk show, The View. "I don't think I want to see any more Mel Gibson movies," Barbara Walters said to wild applause from the audience. Co-host Joy Behar jumped in: The world is so dangerous between what's going on in the Middle East right now, and for this idiot to come out and say things…Of course, he's a drunk and that brings it out of him."

Gibson has asked for forgiveness from the Jewish community and requested to and meet with leaders "with whom I can have a one-on-one discussion to discern the appropriate path for healing." So far, there have been no takers.

The Astrology

Very likely, this arrest will continue to hurt Gibson where it counts—in his reputation, popularity, public standing, career projects, and bank account.

At the time of his arrest, transiting Pluto at 24 Sagittarius, moving through Gibson's sixth house of work, was square his Midheaven at 24 Pisces and transiting Saturn moving through his second house of money and opposing his Venus in Aquarius.

The Midheaven represents one's career potential, reputation, and public standing.

In mythology Pluto and Hades are the same figure. They represent the god of the underworld. The underworld was considered to be full of peril but also great wealth. In astrology, Pluto rules our personal underworld, the unconscious part of ourselves.

Natal Pluto in Gibson's birth chart conjoins Jupiter. Jupiter represents both opportunity and abundance and values and belief systems. A Jupiter-Pluto conjunction is seen as very favorable aspect, representing the opportunity for great wealth. Rheinhold Ebertine describes the Jupiter-Pluto combination as positively: "The striving for the development of power either in the purely spiritual and mental spheres or in the material sphere…" and negatively "The pursuit of fanatical aims." This planetary combination falls in Gibson's third house of ideas.

Gibson's beliefs are further exemplified by an out of sign T-square among Mercury in Capricorn, Neptune in Scorpio, and Uranus in Leo. Mercury forms a quincunx to Pluto. Mercury in Capricorn is associated with practical thinking and conservative ideas. Its aspect to Neptune heightens spiritual thinking; the opposition to Uranus adds an unusual twist; and the quincunx to Pluto, the possibility of fanaticism. Of course, this per se does not prove anti-Semitism, only that Gibson would have unusual, conservative, spiritually related ideas that could be both fanatical and out of the mainstream. He would have fervent attachment to his beliefs, whatever his beliefs might be. Gibson's Capricorn Sun sessiquadrate of Pluto heightens his personal commitment to his beliefs. Mars and Saturn in Scorpio square to Pluto, heighten his commitment to action based upon those beliefs.

Transiting Pluto has been in Sagittarius since 1996 and will remain there until 2009. Pluto's transits bring out the dark side of a sign, and Sagittarius is associated with, among other things, religious beliefs. In transiting the sixth house, Pluto affects Gibson's day-to-day work. This intensifies his commitment to work projects, seeking perfection. Pluto's square to the Midheaven presents a challenge to his career and public standing, at least partially based upon the projects he involves himself with. During Pluto transits, one frequently finds himself left to the hands of fate. This hampers Gibson's ability to stem the negative tide of public opinion against him.

Transiting Saturn is in Gibson's second house of money and was opposite the second house's natural ruler, Venus, at the time of his arrest. Venus falls in his eighth house of joint finances, which would include income from joint ventures as well as shared finances with his spouse. Venus is the planet that rules sociability, and therefore has to do with popularity.

Transiting Saturn is moving forward to oppose transiting Neptune. Neptune falls in Gibson's eighth house. This opposition will square Gibson's Mars-Saturn conjunction in Scorpio. This conjunction falls in the fifth house of creativity and rules tenth house of public standing and the seventh house of relationships.

So far, Gibson has lost a contract for a Holocaust miniseries with ABC. The coming aspects indicate the likelihood of further financial losses, continued loss of public standing, and disapproval from partners.

Gibson's solar arc Mars in Capricorn will conjoin his Descendant later this year. This may prove disruptive to his marriage as well as to other partnerships. Gibson has been quoted as believing in the Catholic doctrine of Extra Ecclesiam nulla salus, which literally means that "Outside the (Catholic) Church, there is no salvation." Since his wife of 26 years is Anglican, this literally means she could "go to hell."

The coming year should prove an interesting one for Mel Gibson.
