A Look Back at Pluto
in Capricorn
and a Look Ahead
2017 Predictions
By Joyce
Levine
(This article
appeared in NCGR
E-News in January,
2017)
The dark side of the
sign that Pluto
transits always
surfaces. Although
Pluto entered
Capricorn in January
of 2008, the
strongest effect in
a sign starts to
show about halfway
through, where it is
now.
Pluto in mythology
is the god of the
underworld. It
represents not only
our personal
underworld – that
which is hidden from
our individual
consciousness – but
the underworld of
the society at
large.
During its trek
through each sign,
the dark sides of
that sign surface so
that they can be
transformed.
Pluto's
transformative power
generally takes the
form of heightening
the power of, then
breaking down, what
the sign it posits
stands for.
Capricorn stands,
among other things,
for big business,
money, government,
authority, and the
status quo. Pluto
entered Capricorn
shortly after the
start of the bear
market in stocks
(October 9, 2007 to
March 9, 2009).
The peak in the real
estate market was in
2006, and housing
prices began their
decline in 2006 and
2007 (transiting
Saturn opposite
Neptune). So
situations were
already declining,
but Pluto always
brings a breakdown
with it. With many
jobs in the housing
and financial
sectors,
historically high
unemployment
followed the housing
and stock market
crashes.
Further increasing
the challenges of
this timeframe,
transiting Saturn in
Virgo made
exact oppositions to
transiting Uranus in
Pisces from November
of 2008 until July
of 2010, with the
influence starting
before and ending
after that time.
Saturn represents,
among other things,
structure or the
status quo; Uranus,
chaos and change.
This combination
representing a
breakdown of the
status quo.
Saturn moved into
Libra and formed
squares to Pluto in
Capricorn in late
2009 to the summer
of 2010, increasing
power struggles.
Uranus then moved
into Aries and
formed seven exact
squares to Pluto
from June of 2012 to
March of 2015, with
the influence
starting before and
ending after that
time. Uranus and
Pluto were conjoined
in the 1960s, a time
of protest and
social unrest.
Their last square
took place in the
1930s, coinciding
with world-wide
depression and the
rise of Hitler.
Then came Saturn in
Sagittarius forming
three squares to
Neptune in Pisces
exactly from
November of 2015 to
September of 2016,
pitting reality
versus illusion, or
the status quo
against the ideal.
So, all of these
planetary
configurations
contributed to the
current situation.
But back to Pluto.
After the stock
market and real
estate crashes,
people were told
that the economic
issues were
temporary and would
soon be fixed. As
years went by
economic data showed
unemployment
declining in
deflationary
environment; i.e.
more jobs, cheaper
goods. What was
left out of the
statistics is that
unemployment numbers
only count people
currently eligible
to collect
unemployment – not
the long-term
unemployed.
The labor
participation rate
reflects a truer
calculation of
employment. This
became the lowest
since the 1970s when
women entered the
work force.
Unemployment figures
also disregard the
types of jobs being
created, which were
primarily in the low
paying service
sector.
In addition,
distortion exists in
the calculation of
these numbers. New
job figures include
what’s called the
“birth-death index,”
a computerized model
that estimates
the number of new
jobs created.
Inflation –
deflation numbers
include hedonics.
Simply put, here’s
how hedonics works.
If the price of
steak increases, you
don’t need to eat
steak, you can eat
hamburger. So
instead of
calculating a price
increase in steak,
the price of
hamburger gets
calculated into the
index. Even worse,
the price of
computers and
electrical equipment
has come down over
the years. This in
itself is truly
deflationary. Yet
to pump up the
deflationary factors
even further, the
increased power of
the computers is
factored as if the
price had further
decreased.
Uprisings in the
Mideast began in
Tunisia in 2010,
followed by Egypt
and Libya in 2011.
These countries were
all ruled by
despotic leaders.
Wealth was in the
hands of the few
while the multitudes
lived in poverty.
Few jobs existed
even for the
educated middle
class.
I kept wondering
when uprisings would
hit the United
States. After all,
Pluto had opposed
the US Venus-Jupiter
conjunction in
Cancer, Uranus had
formed squares to
it. In 2011 Occupy
Wall Street emerged
with protests in
Zuccotti Park in New
York City’s
financial district.
A cry of “we’re the
99%” emerged as a
protest against
income inequality.
There was the
recognition that
while the stock
market was going up,
the economy hadn’t
improved for the
ordinary person on
Main Street.
Yet the movement
seemed to fizzle out
– until the
presidential
primaries of 2016.
The popularity of
Bernie Sanders and
Donald Trump rose
during the timeframe
of the transiting
Saturn – Neptune
square and
transiting Pluto
square the US
Saturn. These
candidacies served
as a repudiation of
both the Democrat
and Republican
Parties.
Saturn can be seen
as representing
reality,
conservatism,
structure, the
status quo. Neptune
can represent the
ideal or illusion.
Saturn – Neptune
timeframes can be
when illusions are
swept away, when
illusions overtake
reality, or both.
The square from
transiting Pluto to
the US Saturn can be
seen as a breakdown
of structure.
While Bernie Sanders
didn’t ultimately
win the Democratic
nomination, he
inspired young
people and a
movement that’s
likely to continue
far past this
presidential
election.
By the same token,
Donald Trump’s
candidacy (at the
time of this
writing, he is still
the president
elect), tore apart
the Republican
Party, normally the
party of big
business and free
trade.
It remains to be
seen what will
happen next. The
Saturn – Neptune
square has passed.
Pluto is still in
Capricorn, so the
breakdown of big
business and
structure is far
from over. And
Trump, who had very
positive planetary
cycles during the
primaries, is now
being hit with
Saturn transits –
where reality
strikes for him and
the piper must be
paid.
The August 21, 2017
solar eclipse at 28
Leo conjoins his
Ascendant and Mars.
The path of this
eclipse cuts through
the United States.
This is likely to
add further
divisions. This
eclipse belongs to
Saros Cycle 145. The
eclipse of July 20,
1963 at 27 Cancer
belongs to this same
eclipse cycle.
President John F.
Kennedy’s Midheaven
was 24 Cancer and
his Saturn 27.
Jupiter, Saturn, and
Pluto all meet in
Capricorn in 2020
and Pluto returns to
its natal position
in the US chart in
2022. Jupiter –
Saturn conjunctions
occur every 20 years
and are the
beginning of new
socio-economic
cycles.
Saturn – Pluto
conjunctions in the
1900s (1914-1915,
1947, and 1982)
coincided with World
War I and the Cold
War with the Soviet
Union in the
aftermath of World
War II and during
the Reagan
Administration.
My research has only
found one other
loose conjunction of
Jupiter, Saturn, and
Pluto. They met in
Taurus in 1145, the
time of the Second
Crusade
(1145-1149). The
Second Crusade was
called for by the
Pope to defeat
Muslims who were
threatening to take
over the Holy Land.
This Crusade
resulted in failure
and was the first
sign of the decay of
Crusader States in
the Middle East.1
The Crusader States
included Jerusalem
(Israel), Tripoli
(western Lebanon),
Antioch (western
border between
Turkey and Spain)
and Edessa (eastern
Turkey).2
It’s very likely
that this triple
conjunction in 2020
will bring about a
new world order.
Pluto’s last trek
through Capricorn
coincided with the
revolt of the
American colonies.
Britain’s loss of
the Revolutionary
War occurred with
Pluto at 23
Capricorn. This
ended Britain’s
control over the
American colonies.
It’s very possible
that Pluto’s return
to this place will
end the US world
hegemony.
