Mercury Retrograde Cycles

How to Successfully Navigate Communication Snafus for 2011

If you know anything about astrology, you have probably heard the term Mercury Retrograde.  Mercury, the winged messenger of the gods, is the planet associated with communication.  This includes writing, speaking, and reasoning.  Mercury is also associated with mechanical and electrical items.  Retrograde is an astronomical phenomenon during which a planet appears to stop in its orbit and move backwards.

Mercury Retrograde periods usually occur three times a year.  In 2011 Mercury is Retrograde from March 30 to April 23, August 2 to August 26, and November 24 to December 13.

Simply put Mercury Retrograde periods are associated with communication snafus and mechanical and electrical items going awry.  During these timeframes, communication mishaps occur more frequently. People are late for appointments or don't show up at all, or show up at the wrong place.  Because of the possibility of miscommunication and unreliable information, it's best to avoid signing contracts or agreements.  Mechanical and electrical items are prone to go out of whack.

So what can you do?  First, before Mercury Retrograde begins, make sure you back up your computer, put air in your tires, and get an oil change if one is due.

During the Retrograde, focus on finishing up old project and doing the research required for new ones.

The Mercury Retrograde timeframe is favorable for writing or rewriting that proposal you've been meaning to get to; so that once Mercury turns Direct (appears to move forward), you're ready to go.  It's also favorable for reconsidering your goals and deciding what you'd like to do next.  If more mundane matters require attention, it's perfect for reconciling the checkbook or cleaning out the closets.  By getting current and clearing away what you no longer want, you create psychic space for future opportunity.

The March 30 to April 23 Retrograde occurs in Aries, from 24 degrees to 13 degrees.  This timeframe is likely to be particularly volatile and unpredictable as a number of more dramatic transits also occur.  These include Mars (in Pisces) square Hades; the Sun (in Aries) opposite Zeus and Saturn and conjoining Uranus; Mars (in Aries) conjoining Uranus, square Pluto and opposition Saturn, as well as Mercury conjoining the Sun and Mars. Not only is this a time of communication snafus, but ongoing uprisings can turn increasingly violent.

The August 2 to August 26 Retrograde occurs from 1 degree of Virgo to 18 degrees of Leo.  This may be another volatile timeframe as Mars conjoins Hades and forms  squares to Uranus, Zeus and Saturn, and an opposition to Pluto.

The November 24 to December 13 Retrograde occurs in Sagittarius from 20 degrees to 3 degrees.  Although some difficult aspects occur at the same time, this timeframe is less volatile than the previous two--although volatility picks up again later in December.

    • Middle class taxpayer revolution expands.

    • Protests against the government and financial system come from the left as well as the right.

    • Pressure on the Federal Reserve grows.

    • US workers demand more protection.

    • Executive pay continues to be a hot button.

    • National alliances break down.

    • More people turn to religion and spirituality.

    • Society exhibits greater compassion for the "have nots."

    • Increased social programs.

    • Seeds of an additional political party that challenge both Republicans and Democrats.

    • Pay especial attention to the timeframe from late July through August.

Planetary cycles continue to be challenging in 2010.  Pluto's trek through Capricorn will change the financial system world-wide. Capricorn rules big business and government. Very likely, we haven't seen the end of banking problems, and more corruption will be uncovered.

In the midst of economic turmoil and scandal, it can be hard to remember that Pluto has three phases:  elimination, change, and transformation.  The elimination stage brings problems to the forefront.  These are not necessarily new problems, but ones that have been ignored or hidden.  During Pluto's second stage, changes are made and usually out of necessity.  The third and final stage is transformation, which may have seemed close to impossible during the first stage.

The last time Pluto was in Capricorn was 1762 to 1777, the timeframe of the American Revolution.  Think of the Boston Tea Party, which took place on December 17, 1773. The precipitating cause of the colonies’ revolt against Great Britain was taxation, in particular "taxation without representation."

Now note the re-occurrence of Tea Parties since Pluto has entered Capricorn in 2008. These protesters want smaller government.  Much less publicized are the protests coming from the "left," such the one at the American Bankers Association annual convention in Chicago in October 2009, led by the AFL-CIO president.

When Howard Dean ran for president, he suggested that Democrats unite over common issues rather than fight over social ones.  In today's world, there is dissatisfaction with government by the left, the right, and the middle, among Republicans and Democrats.

It seems more likely than ever that a third party could take hold.  Expect dramatic political changes in the next few years.
